Coco Loco is a coconut creamy and rich co*cktail very popular around the Cartagena beaches in Colombia. It's very easy to make and delicious.
What is Coco Loco?
It is a Colombian Coconut co*cktail, popular on the Caribbean coast of the country. Coco Loco literally translates to "Crazy Coconut".
There are different variations of Coco Loco throughout the country and every vendor has his or her own recipe for it, but its pretty much a co*cktail made with rum, tequila, vodka, lime juice, coconut cream, coconut water and ice cubes.
This refreshing drink is usually sold by vendors around the beach who make them right in front of you while you wait. They take a fresh coconut and make a hole in the top with a machete, and then prepare the delicious and fresh Coco Loco for you. They always serve this co*cktail in fresh coconuts, the presentation is beautiful and the drink is absolutely amazing!
I didn't have fresh coconuts today so, I served it in a totuma and mason jars, but if you can find fresh coconuts use them as a serving glass and your guests will love you for it.
You can serve this coconut co*cktail with my shrimp ceviche like I usually do.
I hope you enjoy making this coconut co*cktail. It is extremely refreshing for summertime parties, after dinner drink or just sitting on the porch reading a magazine.
If you like coconut and creamy drinks, this is the drink for you. Want more Colombian co*cktail recipes? Try my sabajón, aguardiente sour and refajo.
Ingredients to Make this Drink
You'll find the printable recipe card with exact amounts and directions below.
Rum: Use your favorite rum. I like to use white rum for my coco loco.
Vodka: I recommend using a good quality vodka.
Tequila: Use a good quality tequila for the best flavor.
Cream of Coconut: This is sweetened, creamy and thick coconut in a can. Cream of coconut is not the same as coconut milk and coconut cream. You can find it online or a local liquor store. I usually buy the brands Coco Real or Coco Lopéz
Coconut Water: I prefer fresh coconut water to make this co*cktail.
Lime: The juice to make the co*cktail and slices to decorate the glass.
Ice: To serve
How to Make Coco Loco
- Place all the ingredients, except the ice and lime slices, in a blender, and blend for a few seconds, or until smooth.
- Pour into a glass or a fresh coconut. Garnish with a lime slice and serve immediately.

I had a "coco fresa" in San Andrés on Johnny Key (basically same thing, only with a kick of strawberry) and asked the vendor how to make it-- of course her lips were sealed. Here's to hoping I can work with this recipe as a guide to get at least close to the best co*cktail I've had in my life!Reply

I tried this drink and it was a little sour for my taste. What can be done to make it a little sweeter?Reply
Lorenzo
I used 1/2 measurements of this recipe (so juice from 1 1/2 limes) and also found a little sour. Next time I will try with only 1 lime, or maybe add more coconut milk or a teaspoon of sugarReply
