Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that The Snow Sister, based on the best-selling novel by Maja Lunde and Lisa Aisato, is the story of a young boy and his family grieving the death of his teen sister. The film has some very sad and emotional scenes as well as ultimately uplifting messages. A character is described as having fallen into a depression that prompted her to stop eating. Another death of a young girl by drowning many years ago is also described in the film. A girl nearly drowns in a city pool, and a boy seems at risk of falling into a frozen lake when he's ice skating. Other potentially intense scenes involve a boy hiding from a mysterious older man. The main character shows determination and compassion in trying to turn his and his family's grief around. His thoughtfulness and generosity help others as well.

Positive Role Models
a lot
Julian is thoughtful, generous, and wise beyond his years. He is determined to figure out how to process his grief and move forward, and in doing so, he helps his sister, his parents, his friend Hedwig, and an older acquaintance do the same. He shows all of them compassion, and he gets this in return from all of them as well.

Positive Messages
some
You can hold onto departed loved ones by keeping their memories alive and keeping them in your heart. Grief is a process that takes time. One or two good friends are better than 100 "sour" friends. Care for your friends.

What's the Story?
Ten-year-old Julian (Mudit Gupta) and his family are struggling to deal with the loss of their beloved sister/daughter Juni in THE SNOW SISTER. Their first Christmas without her (and Julian's 11th birthday) are fast approaching. One day he meets Hedwig (Celina Meyer Hovland), a full-of-life girl who gets him to open up about his sister and start living again. Julian, in turn, will help Hedwig and others process their own losses.
Is It Any Good?
This book-based Norwegian film is a tearjerker that ends on a sweet note and holds helpful lessons for kids about dealing with loss and grief. The Snow Sister follows 10-year-old Julian at home, school, and around his small town in the days leading up to Christmas. The film appears to stick closely to its source material, focusing on story over form. The twists won't come as a surprise for those familiar with the tale. Visually, the film is not especially memorable, though it does convey some interesting details about Norwegian life, as well as a visceral sense of the cold outside (as well as the glowing warmth of some indoor spaces).
