Is a 250W power supply enough for an eBike? ›

You might get several times the wattage during a hard uphill climb. Therefore, again, for most riders not tackling intense hills, 250 watts will get the job done. You might break a sweat, but you'll feel a lot of support. And when going full throttle, you'll still be able to hit top speeds of around 15 MPH.

E-bike torque can be increased by switching to a higher voltage battery. These are in the range of 36-52V. For some motors of certain wattages, increasing e-bike torque is impossible. For mid-drive motors, torque can be increased by changing the gearing.

As long as there is sufficient rating to supply your controller you'll be fine.

How to remove speed limiter on electric bike? ›

Some eBikes allow speed adjustments through the onboard display. Follow the instructions specific to your eBike model to modify the speed settings. If the speed limiter is a physical component, you will need to locate the specific wires connected to the speed sensor. Carefully disconnect the wires that limit the speed.

Ultimately, the required wattage will depend on the specific needs and preferences of the rider. In general, a good electric bike will have a motor that is between 250 and 750 watts. Bikes with motors in this range are capable of speeds of up to 25km/h and can easily tackle hills and other challenging terrain.

Usually, the most common 250W motors will require a 36 volt battery, the larger ones, such as 750W or 1000W require a more powerful 48 volt battery (or more). The capacity of the batteries is shown in amp hours (Ah). The higher the Ah, the bigger the battery.

One of the main differences between a 250w e-bike and the 500w version is its hill-climbing power. A 500w can take up to 130 kilograms of weight, while the 250w motor is better for lightweight riders. And finally, 500w ebike top speed can reach up to 32 km/h, while the 250 watts model can go as fast as 24 km/h.

There's some caveats to that statement, but by and large a 250W motor is enough to give a rider's pedaling a nice assist. In fact, you'll see some of our favorite and most recommended e-bikes come with 250 watt motors. Remember, an e-bike is still a bicycle — by definition at least a little physical effort is required.
